Roy Moore Once Sided With a Child Rapist; Evangelicals Still Want to Vote for Him

Roy Moore once sided in favor of a child rapist. But that (and recent allegations of child molestation) won't stop Evangelicals from voting for him.

A look into the judicial record of Roy Moore uncovered an item particularly disturbing given the Washington Post report last week that alleged a history of sexual advances to teenage girls. According to Law & Crime, the Republican nominee for Alabama's open US Senate seat once cast the sole vote in favor of a man accused of raping a four-year-old.

While serving as a justice on the Alabama Supreme Court, Moore heard the case of Eric Lemont Higdon, a man who was accused and convicted of two sodomy charges due to sexual assault against a four-year-old boy at Mama's Place Christian Academy in Clay, Alabama.

Higdon's conviction was overturned, and the state appealed the decision to the Alabama Supreme Court where eight of the nine justices found him guilty.

The dissenting decision was from Moore, who wrote of the four-year-old's rape:

"Because there was no evidence in this case of an implied threat of serious physical injury...or of an implied threat of death, Higdon cannot be convicted of sodomy in the first degree "by forcible compulsion."

The state prosecutor who argued the case to reinstate the conviction was Moore's opponent for the GOP Senate nomination, Luther Strange.

However, this news and recent allegations of child molestation are proving that Moore may be Teflon with Evangelical voters who make up his strongest supporters.

Newsweek reports that in a poll taken last week, nearly 40 percent of Evangelical Christians in Alabama say they're now�more likely to vote for�Roy Moore after multiple allegations that he molested children.
