Ricky Martin Takes On Donald Trump

EDGE READ TIME: 2 MIN.

Ricky Martin has taken on Donald Trump. And not with a tweet (Trump's favorite method of attack), but in an op-ed column for Univision where he defends that network's popular anchor Jorge Ramos who got into a heated exchange (and was ejected) at a Trump campaign press event in Iowa Aug. 25.

During the exchange, Trump told Ramos to "go back to Univision," where he is a highly rated news anchor. The fracas began when Ramos attempted to ask a question of Trump, but the presidential candidate told him that he was not chosen to ask a question and he should sit down. After Ramos persisted, Trump motioned to a security person to remove Ramos from the conference.

When pressed by questions by Ramos' colleagues, Trump asked Ramos to return to the conference. (You can watch the exchange below.) During the second exchange, Trump mentioned that he is suing Univision for $500 million after the network rescinded the television broadcast of his Miss Universe pageant in July. The network made that decision after Trump's controversial comments about Mexican immigrants during his speech announcing his candidacy.

Below are some quotes from Martin's op-ed.

"The fact that an individual like Donald Trump, a candidate for the presidency of the United States for the Republican party, has the audacity to continue to gratuitously harass the Latin community makes my blood boil," Martin writes in an English translation reported by Billboard.com.

"This action from Trump doesn't surprise me, what does surprise me is that as Hispanics we continue to accept the aggressions and accusations of people like him who attack our dignity.

"Enough is enough!

"If we are united for some things we should be united for others. We have already shown the United States who we are and we cannot allow this behavior.

"We have to defeat the power that Trump pretends to have over Latinos, anchored in low rhetoric and xenophobic speech, which his campaign team is convinced works for him."
