Gay Twins, Dad Go on 'Ellen' After Emotional Viral Video
Jason St. Amand READ TIME: 2 MIN.
Twin brothers Austin and Aaron Rhodes, who made headlines last week after an emotional video of them coming out as gay to their father went viral, are now bringing their story to "The Ellen DeGeneres Show."
Along with their father, Austin and Aaron appeared on the daytime talk show this week and told their story to a national audience, talking about their viral video, which currently has more than 14.5 million views and 125,000 likes.
The brothers, who are models and go by The Rhodes Bros online, also allowed their dad to share his side of the story with DeGeneres.
"When they called I knew they were crying and something was wrong. As a father you just feel it. What's wrong? I could hear it coming from them, their voices," he said. "When they told me, I just felt as though, the only thing came through me was 'I love you both. I love you both unconditionally. You're my children. I can't undo being your father and I don't want to...'"
"I really feel like now there's a weight off both our sides. Now I feel like we can talk about anything. I was very proud of my boys," he added.
DeGeneres lauded the twins' father's reaction to their coming out.
"That is the right thing to say... 'I love you both.' Even if you don't fully understand it right now there are ways to understand it and time will help with that... I can't tell you how amazing it is for you to just love them and accept them."
To top the interview, in true DeGeneres form, she gave the brothers a $10,000 check from Shutterfly to help furnish their new Los Angeles home.
In the original eight-and-a-half-minute coming out video, the twins said they made the clip in hopes viewers will feel "encouraged and inspired."
Coming out to their father was difficult, however:
"Basically, there's gonna be some stuff coming out on YouTube soon and we just wanted to call you and talk to you about it before... well I don't know how else to put it but, I'm gay and um Austin is too, and uh we just wanted to like call and tell you," Aaron says while sobbing.
"Because I just didn't want you to find out through YouTube and stuff and I wanted to be able to have that conversation because I feel we're close enough and I finally feel like I'm at that point now to be able to tell you," Austin adds. "And I want you to have you behind us 100 percent and I don't want you to not love us anymore."
Their father tells them he still loves and "that'll never change. You gotta live your lives and do what you gotta do."
At the end of the video, the twins said they hope to inspire their followers to be themselves whether they're "gay, bi or transgender or straight but living with another issue."
"Do whatever makes you happy," Aaron adds.
