Music and pop culture enthusiasts have a new reason to follow the Yellow Brick Road: Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton have signed on as executive producers for Dorothy, a forthcoming Prime Video series that promises to reimagine L. Frank Baum’s The Wonderful Wizard of Oz as a contemporary, music-fueled journey set in modern-day Manhattan. The project, under the creative stewardship of acclaimed producer Gina Matthews (13 Going on 30, Isn’t It Romantic), is positioned as a young adult (YA) drama that seeks to reflect the evolving landscape of identity, belonging, and community in today’s world .

Dorothy, as described in official statements, will use the Yellow Brick Road as a “metaphor for the challenges and choices facing young adults” in the 21st century . Rather than the rural Kansas of Baum’s original, the series transplants Dorothy’s journey to the bustling streets of Manhattan, foregrounding themes of transformation, self-discovery, and the importance of chosen family.

Showrunner Gina Matthews, who has long been inspired by Baum’s work, emphasized the enduring relevance of Dorothy’s story. “The story reminds us of the qualities we need to get through hard times, and Dorothy is a symbol of strength who shows us that with a little kindness — and a lot of grit — we can not only achieve great things but also lift up those around us. I’m excited to bring that message to the world, now more than ever,” Matthews said in a statement .

Stefani, whose music and fashion have long resonated with LGBTQ+ audiences, brings her signature creativity to the project alongside Shelton, her husband and frequent collaborator. The pair, both seasoned television personalities and musicians, are expected to infuse the series with a dynamic musical atmosphere and authentic emotional storytelling .

Blake Shelton expressed his enthusiasm: “We’re really excited about all the possibilities this show brings, and I’m so grateful that Gina shared the idea with me and Lee, and I knew right away it was something Gwen would connect with. Her creativity and perspective are such a natural fit for this project. It’s a creative and modern take on a classic, and being part of something that blends music, emotion, and the character of Dorothy is inspiring to me” .

Since its original 1939 film adaptation, The Wizard of Oz has held a special place in LGBTQ+ culture, with Judy Garland’s Dorothy considered an enduring gay icon and the phrase “friend of Dorothy” becoming coded language within queer communities . This new adaptation’s focus on diversity, self-acceptance, and forging authentic paths promises to further that legacy, offering contemporary queer and trans youth a narrative that mirrors their experiences and aspirations.

Dorothy is part of Prime Video’s broader strategy to develop youth-oriented, music-led dramas that center the voices and experiences of marginalized communities. The announcement follows the release of several high-profile projects aimed at amplifying LGBTQ+ stories and creators in recent years, reflecting an industry-wide shift toward greater inclusivity and intersectionality .

Although a release date has not yet been confirmed, anticipation is building among both longtime Wizard of Oz fans and new audiences eager for imaginative, empowering storytelling that speaks to the realities of today’s youth .

As producer Gina Matthews concluded: “Dorothy is a symbol of strength who shows us that with a little kindness — and a lot of grit — we can not only achieve great things but also lift up those around us. I’m excited to bring that message to the world, now more than ever” .

With the Yellow Brick Road winding through Manhattan’s cityscape, Dorothy promises to be a contemporary celebration of music, diversity, and the enduring power of hope—a journey that both honors its queer legacy and speaks directly to the dreams and realities of a new generation.
